Those who miss between one to two hours of the recommended seven hours of sleep in a 24-hour period and then getting behind the wheel, nearly double their risk for a crash, a major study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has found. It is as dangerous as driving while drunk. AAA warns drivers that getting less than seven hours of sleep may have deadly consequences.

It is thought that driving while drowsy is responsible for around one in five crashes on British roads.
