Meghan Markle has flown back to Canada as the Queen and other senior royals took decisive action and ordered their teams to contemplate a “workable solution” to Prince Harry and Meghan’s future roles. The Duchess has headed back to be with son Archie, who stayed in the country as she and Harry returned to the UK.

Sources reveal that she "had not" planned on staying long in Britain after arriving on Monday, following the family’s seven week break in Vancouver. A spokeswoman for Meghan said: “I can confirm she is in Canada.”

A Palace statement said: "The Queen, the Prince Of Wales and Duke of Cambridge have directed their teams to work together at pace with the government and the Sussex household to find workable solutions." The royal family will talk to multiple governments which suggests US and Canadian officials may be involved.

Meanwhile, Harry is not expected to be seen in public again until next Thursday, when he will do the draw for the Rugby League World Cup in 2021. Given the Queen’s timetable of ‘days’ it is likely they will want any talks concluded before Prince Charles travels to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories at the end of the month, to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the former Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Harry and Meghan said in their statement: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queen.”

The development comes just hours after the Royal family released a statement saying they would be working with Harry and Meghan in forming a plan on what was described as a "complicated issue". Sources close to the family said the couple had been planning the move as far back as Spring 2019. It has also been claimed the couple chose to disregard pleas from their closest aides that they should hold off from releasing their statement.

When in the UK, the couple reside at their Windsor home, Frogmore Cottage. They came under scrutiny for their use of private jets, which were paid for by the couple and Elton John. Before she married into the family Meghan, who had a successful acting career, had a personal fortune of around £3.8m.
