A man who scaled an information board gantry resulting in a 28-hour closure of part of the M1 ended up costing the wider economy at least £1 million an hour, a court has heard.
Forty-five-year-old Nicholas Muton appeared at Leicester Magistrates' Court charged with causing a public nuisance following the stand-off which lasted for 28 hours.
Part of the southbound carriageway of the motorway was closed while negotiators tried to talk Muton down.
Prosecutor Kwok Wan, according to a report in The Times, said it had been estimated that the road closure had cost the economy £28 million and the emergency services £1 million.
He was remanded in custody until July 13 when he will appear at Leicester Crown Court.
