A man has been jailed for two years and four months by Sheffield Crown Court for controlling his girlfriend's social life, telling her what to eat and wear, and forcing her to undergo a gruelling fitness regime.
Thirty-year-old Gemma Doherty told the court that she was forced to eat 50 cans of Tuna a week and run on a treadmill every day to meet his demands, and he would not let her see her friends.
Twenty-seven-year-old Mohammed Anwaar made her burn 500 calories every single day on the treadmill.
Doherty, a mother of two from Sheffield, said: βHe treated me like an animal β almost like a guinea pig in a laboratory. He wanted me to have abs and a huge a** β a big one like Kim Kardashian. His favourite model was Graceyanne Barbosa and he would make me look at her fitness routines and practise them. If I didn't he would beat me.β
In one incident she fell unconscious when Anwaar throttled her after smashing up her iPhone, slapping and kicking her. He also attacked her in front of her sons and on two or three occasions slapped her around the back of the head.
According to a report in The Times, Doherty said that she had even attempted to take her own life and was beaten up when she survived. She added that Anwaar had told her that he had paid men to wait inside her workplace to make sure that she was not flirting with men.
Anwaar pleaded guilty to a new charge of controlling or coercive behaviour along with nine counts of assault and criminal damage.
