A man was critically injured after a hit and a run in Newton Heath. The 53 year-old was struck as he was walking down Briscoe Lane shortly after 10pm. The 2017 grey coloured Vauxhall Astra which collided with him failed to stop and carried on towards Alan Turing Way, close to the Etihad Stadium , police said. The alarm was raised and emergency services including police and paramedics raced to the scene.

A large chunk of the road from close to the junction with Carruthers Street was taped off by police as they dealt with the aftermath. The man was rushed to Salford Royal hospital with what GMP say are life threatening injuries and he remains in a critical condition Saturday they confirmed. Officers could be seen taking photographs of the scene and placing down yellow evidence markers at points on the road as they attempted to piece together exactly what happened in the moments leading up to, and after the collision. The driver still hasn't been traced and police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward immediately.
