The most populous town in the Epping Forest District of Essex, Loughton just elected an Indian-origin councillor as its mayor. Philip Abraham, who has been serving as the deputy mayor for the last one year, took over the role from former mayor Carol Davis. Speaking after the results, Abraham said, “I am absolutely thrilled to have been elected as the mayor. I feel honoured to have been given the opportunity to serve the community as mayor.”

Representing the Alderton ward, Abraham was first elected to the council in 2012, and re-elected in 2016. He is supported by a non-political local organisation called Loughton Residents Association. Born in Kerala, Abraham is actively involved with other Indian communities across the UK, and is the founder of UK-Kerala Business Forum, and the co-founder of British South India Council of Commerce. He also owns newspaper, Kerala Links, published from London for the past 225 years.

The mayor will represent his/her town at civic occasions and events held by the town's schools, clubs, and other community and charitable organisations.
