Monday 13th October 2014 15:20 EDT

Virendra Sharma, MP for Ealing Southall, was invited by Ealing Law Centre to their official opening.

Ealing Law Centre provides free legal advice and representation to the people of Ealing. It is run by volunteer trustees and is also part of the Law Centres Network.

The event showcased the current work carried out by the Law Centre and addressed issues that many people in the local community are currently experiencing due to the cuts made to legal aid.

Ealing Law Centre has helped 284 new clients during their first year of opening, assisting the majority of their clients with housing and immigration matters.  The Centre has also successfully brought £100,000 in charitable funding into the Borough to contribute to immigration cases that are no longer covered by legal aid.

The event was a success and attended by Shadow Justice Minister - Andy Slaughter MP, Claude Moraes MEP, Cllr Julian Bell - Leader of Ealing Council, Dr Rupa Huq - Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Ealing Central & Action and other local councillors.

Mr Sharma said: “As one of the only not-for-profit legal aid providers, Ealing Law Centre provides an invaluable service to my constituents and those living in the Borough of Ealing.  With cuts to legal aid, it is vital that people have access to legal advice and representation; Ealing Law Centre is an excellent charity that provides this service. I wish Ealing Law Centre every success in their future endeavours.”
