Rishi Sunak, the son-in-law of Infosys’ Narayan Murthy, has now been appointed as Chancellor of the Exchequer following Sajid Javid’s resignation. The appointment of Sunak, currently the Treasury chief secretary, was confirmed by Downing Street in a tweet.

The MP for Rishmond had previously until today served as the chief secretary to the Treasury and been in parliament for just over four years. Educated at Winchester College before reading PPE at Oxford, wide justification around his expected promotion circles around two key aspects – he backed Brexit and he backed Boris Johnson during last year’s leadership contest. He even stood in for Johnson in some televised debates during last year’s election campaign.
