On 2nd January 2018, a police officer was stabbed while trying to arrest a suspect following a robbery in Sutton. Detectives are investigating the incident.

At nearly 7pm on the day of the incident, the police were called to reports of a knife-point robbery close to St James Road. Officers attended the scene and spoke to the male victim before starting their search in the local area. A suspect was identified by officers who ran from the police. Following a short chase, the man was detained outside a pub on the High Street.

A police constable sustained a stab wound to his leg during the arrest. The officer was taken to a South London hospital by the London Ambulance Service. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and he remains in a stable condition.

The victim of the robbery was not stabbed. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The accused was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and robbery. He is currently in custody at a South-West London police station.

Chief Superintendent, Robyn Williams, Borough commander for Sutton said, “Thankfully, incidents of this nature are rare. However, they highlight the risks officers face on a daily basis while carrying out their duties. Officers regularly run towards danger in order to protect the public; for one to be assaulted in such a way is totally unacceptable, and it is only by luck that his injuries were not more serious. Our thoughts are with the officer, his family and colleagues.”

The police are urging people who witnessed either the robbery or the stabbing who have not yet spoken to the police to contact them via 101. They can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
