Data recently released by NHS England has recorded that over 16% people who tested positive for coronavirus and died as a result were from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities. On Monday 21st April, NHS England provided a further breakdown in the deaths caused by coronavirus filtering them with ethnicity as a factor.

Figures collated by NHS England as of April 17th, note that out of the 13,918 patients in hospitals in England who had tested positive for Covid-19 at time of death, 73.6% were of white ethnicity, 16.2% were of BAME ethnicity. The remaining 9.5% had no stated or identifiable ethnicity.

The numbers were revealed after a review was announced by the Downing Street to examine why a disproportionate number of BAME people were affected by Covid-19 especially when the 2011 census chronicles that BAME workforce constitute 10.8% of the UK population.

Off the 16% who passed away from coronavirus; 3% are Indian-origin, 2.1 % Pakistani and 0.6% Bangladeshi people.
