On Wednesday 18thApril, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan introduced the prime ministers of Canada and New Zealand, Justin Trudeau and Jacinda Ardern, to an audience of London teenagers.

Both prime ministers participated in a Q&A at City Hall, alongside Sadiq Khan, while Prime Minister Theresa May was preparing for Question Time.

Both premiers are renown for working for gender equality and the event at City Hall commemorated 100 years since women securing the right to vote in the United Kingdom. The audience comprised of around 80 secondary school students from the regions of Lewisham, Southwark and Haringey. The Mayor of London introduced the world leaders to the audience as “two of the leading feminists in the world”.

Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, who is on her last overseas trip before she is due to give birth in June, said, “This event will be a great opportunity to hear the thoughts of young people on key social issues such as gender equality. The timing couldn't be better, with 2018 celebrating 100 years since women in the UK first won the right to vote, and 125 years for New Zealand women.”

Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, added, “This anniversary is a major milestone, but it also throws into sharp relief the work we still need to do to make gender equality a reality. Everyone benefits when women can participate freely, fully and equally in society – and today's youngest leaders are bringing us closer than ever to that goal.”
