A rogue landlord in Poplar has lost a bid to overturn a demolition order after he ignored planning laws and built an illegal extension at the exterior of his three-storey house.

Enforcement officers from Tower Hamlets visited the address and found that 10 tenants had been squeezed into the rat and cockroach infested extension. They found the tenants sharing a kitchen, shower and two toilets.

The landlord, Mohammed Suruk Miah appealed against the demolition order, stating that the extension cost him £7,000 to build. However, the case was dismissed at tribunal as the property posed as a health and safety hazard.

Cabinet member for housing, Cllr Sirajul Islam said, “This illegal extension presented a serious hazard to tenants.”
