Johnson back at No. 10, Corbyn to resign

Johnson scores the largest ever majority since 1987, Corbyn and Swinson to resign from Party leadership and Brexit Party scores duck at the ballot. 

The Tories have sealed the General Election victory winning a thumping majority of 364 seats, the largest since 1987 under the leadership of Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The mandate is expected to see Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn resign from Party presidency alongside Jo Swinson who lost her seat to the SNP in East Dunbartonshire. And alongside Johnson, most of the sitting South Asian MPs are back in business as well. Names include Priti Patel, Sajid Javid, Alok Sharma, Seema Malhotra, Virendra Sharma, Shailesh Vara among others.

Thinktank British Future believes that the 2019 general election has produced the most diverse parliament ever, with one in 10 MPs now from an ethnic minority background. It believes that a decade ago there was only 1 BAME MP out of the 40. The new Parliament will have 65 MPs from an ethnic minority background, compared with 52 at the 2017 general election.

They comprise 22 BAME Conservative MPs, 41 Labour, and 2 Lib Dems. More than 20% of Labour MPs are now from ethnic minorities, compared with 6% of Conservatives in the new House of Commons.

Labour limps to Leicester East despite Vaz

Labour candidate Claudia Webbe managed to secure the seat with 25,090 votes as opposed Conservatives' Bhupen Dave who chased her with 19,071 votes. Although, Labour has secured a majority of 6,000 votes, since 2017 it has seen a massive decrease of 16.2% vote share with Conservatives gaining over 14% of this vote.

Patel surges in Witham with an increased majority

Home Secretary Priti Patel has been re-elected as the MP for Witham, with an increased majority. The Conservative candidate beat Labour's Martin Edobor by 24,082 votes, 5,436 more votes than the majority at the 2017 election.

Javid dominates in Bromsgrove with an increased majority

Chancellor Sajid Javid has been re-elected as the MP for Bromsgrove, with an increased majority. The Conservative candidate beat Labour's Rory Shannon by 23,106 votes, 6,533 more votes than the majority at the 2017 election.

Alok Sharma heads Reading West

International Development Secretary Alok Sharma has been re-elected as the MP for Reading West, with an increased majority. The Conservative candidate beat Labour's Rachel Eden by 4,117 votes, 1,241 more votes than the majority at the 2017 election.

Conservatives' Sunak shines in Richmond

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Rishi Sunak has been re-elected as the MP for Richmond in Yorkshire, with an increased majority. The Conservative candidate beat Labour's Thom Kirkwood by 27,210 votes, 4,102 more votes than the majority at the 2017 election.

Labour's Sharma retains Ealing Southall

Virendra Sharma holds on to his constituency in Ealing Southall. He has been re-elected as the MP for Ealing Southall, with a decreased majority. The Labour candidate beat Conservative Tom Bennett by 16,084 votes, 6,006 votes less than the majority at the 2017 election.

Malhotra holds ground in Feltham and Heston with a reduced majority

Seema Malhotra has been re-elected as the MP for Feltham & Heston, with a decreased majority. The Labour candidate beat Conservative Jane Keep by 7,859 votes, 7,744 votes less than the majority at the 2017 election. Voter turnout was down by 5.8 percentage points since the last general election.

Vara re-elected in Cambridgeshire North West

Shailesh Vara has been re-elected as the MP for Cambridgeshire North West, with an increased majority. The Conservative candidate beat Labour's Cathy Cordiner-Achenbach by 25,983 votes, 7,975 more votes than the majority at the 2017 election.

Blackman surges in Harrow East with an increased majority

Bob Blackman, the incumbent for the Conservative Party has won his fourth election in a row for the Harrow East seat. Despite being in one of the few Tory marginal seats in London after his margin narrowed to around 1,757 in 2017, Blackman managed to increase his lead to 8,170. Labour's Kashmir resolution seems to have divided the community more than anticipated as Blackman who has actively campaigned for the rights of the Kashmiri Pandits has surged ahead. 

Vaz's sister holds Walsall South 

Shadow Commons leader Valerie Vaz has been re-elected as the MP for Walsall South, with a significantly decreased majority. The Labour candidate beat Conservative Gurjit Bains by 3,456 votes, less than half the majority at the 2017 election.

Barry continues to carry-on in Brent North

However, Labour's Barry Gardiner retains his seat in Brent North defeating Conservatives' Anjana Patel with a majority of 8,000 votes.

Labour's Gill holds on to Birmingham Edgbaston

Preet Gill has been re-elected as the MP for Birmingham Edgbaston, with a decreased majority. She got 21,217 votes compared to 24,124 last time but still beat Conservative Alex Yip by 5,614 votes, 1,303 votes less than the majority at the 2017 election.

Dhesi holds his ground in Slough

Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi has been re-elected as the MP for Slough, with a decreased majority. The Labour candidate beat Conservative Kanwal Toor Gill by 13,640 votes, 3,358 (a drop of about 5% vote share) votes less than the majority at the 2017 election.

For the first time at a general election more ethnic minority women were elected than men, with 37 women from a minority background taking their place in parliament and 28 men. Following last night's dramatic victory, in the eastern part of the EU, the major sentiment as the scale of Johnson’s victory became clear was a relief that the Brexit saga might finally be coming to an end, and hope that the prime minister would be able to get a deal through parliament now.
