Indian students lag behind the Chinese

There are five times as many Chinese students as Indians studying in the UK. Recent figures show that Indian students continue to lag behind those from China and other countries who study in the UK. Approximately 12,500 students from India began their studies at universities in the UK in 2017-18 in comparison to the 62,000 students arriving from the EU, and over 76,000 from China according to a report from the UK Higher Education Statistics Authority.

Keith Vaz MP, the UK’s longest-serving Indian-origin Member of Parliament, argues that this raises questions about the UK's immigration policy towards students from India.

Keith Vaz MP said- “Indian students are an incredibly important part of the UK education sector. UK universities are routinely ranked among the best in the world. It is therefore, shocking to see so few Indian students travelling to the UK. This will place the UK higher-education sector at a competitive disadvantage compared to the US and EU.   I hope that the British Government takes note and reforms its immigration and higher-education policies to correct this enduring historical imbalance.”
