Couple who had “one of first” double Indian wedding in UK celebrate golden anniversary

72-year-old subhash Gohil, and his wife Ratanbai Gohil, 68, took part in “one of the first” double weddings in the UK will be celebrating their golden wedding anniversary this year.

The couple from Harrow were married in a twin civil ceremony at Oldham Registry Office on 28th March 1968. Ratanbai and Subhash Gohil married alongside Ratanbai's sister, Manjula, who married Valabh Parmar.

Following the civil ceremony, the couples had their traditional Hindu wedding on 12th May 1968 and both ceremonies were reported in the Oldham Chronicle.

Subhash and Ratanbai Gohil met in 1967 and after liking each other, Subhash went to his elder family members to arrange a meeting. During that era, the couple were only able to communicate using red phone boxes.

The couple have four children and six grandchildren.
