Boris Johnson is understood to have been cleared of breaking the Tories' code of conduct with comments he made about women wearing burqas.

The former foreign secretary in a Telegraph columnhad written that they looked liked "letter boxes" or "bank robbers" where he argued against a ban on full-face veils. Following which there were dozens of complaints and Prime Minister Theresa May and Tory Chairman Brandon Lewis and had called on him to apologise.

But it is understood an independent panel has said he had been "respectful and tolerant".

But, Muslim Council of Britain, an umbrella body for 500 mosques, schools and associations, said it had failed to see how Mr Johnson's comments "were 'respectful' and 'tolerant' as the panel has concluded".

The founder of the Conservative Muslim Forum, Lord Sheikh, wrote to Mr Brandon Lewis after Mr Johnson wrote the column in August, demanding "serious action".

The Tory party's code of conductstates that Tory officials and elected representatives must not "use their position to bully, abuse, victimise, harass or unlawfully discriminate against others".

Mr Johnson could have been referred to the party's board, which has the power to expel him following these complaints. But, it is understood that he has been cleared off breaching the party's code of conduct.
