Official figures reveal for the first time that life expectancy has fallen in some parts of England by more than a year since 2011.

According to the first detailed analysis of national data, people in isolated rural regions, as well as posy-industrial towns are dying at s younger age, compared to London and parts of southeast England where longevity is on the rise.

Theories suggest that the consistent falls in life expectancy over 5 years in several local authority areas are due to cuts to services and economic stagnation. Other causes may include the greater effect of drinking and smoking in poorer regions, increase in obesity rates, as well as loneliness or the lack of care when children move away from their parents. The rise in death from flu in recent winters is also said to be a contributing factor.
