Alpa Kapasi has been announced a finalist in the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Leader of the Year category of the Construction News Workforce Awards. Her current focus is working on the development of the largest HS2 terminus in London, a project comprised of a joint venture between Balfour Beatty, Vinci and Systra. Asked what she enjoys most about her role, “the challenge of working within a very traditional industry to bring about a fundamental culture change that will impact not just the people working on the project, but also communities in some of the most deprived parts of London”.

Alpa, pictured, was born in the Ugandan capital Kampala and came to British shores as a child refugee following the expulsion of Asians from the ‘Pearl of Africa’ in 1972. Her family had lived there for three generations. Her ancestral roots lie in Gujarat in India, but the majority of her family members are now settled in the UK, Europe and the USA.

Alpa, who has worked in the specialist field of EDI for over 25 years, believes that her experiences in early childhood laid the foundations of her values and dedication to addressing issues of inequality and social justice. Speaking of the project she’s involved with, she said: “We have the opportunity to make a real difference here and I believe that this project is committed to doing so. This is a very special project and I am proud to be a part of it.”

Alpa is one of four finalists in her category. Winners across the 18 award categories will be announced at a prestigious ceremony in London on 8 November 2022.
