The Manchester Museum will be showcasing the UK's most extensive compilation of vinyl archives, dedicated to South Asian music. Opening on July 19th, the South Asia Gallery will feature a captivating installation titled "Request Line," created by artist Faisal Hussain.

At the heart of this collection lies a treasure trove of 3,000 records rescued in 2017 from the Oriental Star Agencies Store in Balsall Heath, Birmingham, just before its closure. Originally, these records were played during the 1980s on BBC Radio West Midlands, courtesy of Mohammed Ayub, Anita Bhalla, and Farah Durrani, who hosted the popular 'East in West' radio show.

Intriguingly, the installation will not only present a curated selection of these records but also showcase their vinyl covers. Additionally, it will unveil the handwritten requests that people sent in during the 1980s, carefully preserved within the vinyl sleeves. This intimate glimpse into the South Asian community in Birmingham during that era is sure to captivate visitors.

Beyond the vinyl collection, the exhibition will incorporate various multimedia elements, including videos, animations, archival imagery, and dedicated listening stations. To celebrate the launch of this installation, the artist will deliver a talk, accompanied by performances from DJ Rizmi and Chande. This event marks the opening of South Asian Heritage Month 2023 at the Manchester Museum, promising a remarkable and enriching experience for all who attend.
