A Labour Party Conference that took place in Brighton last weekend witnessed a debate with Labour MP of Pakistani origin Naz Shah, who reportedly described Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “butcher” but failed to gain votes for a Kashmir motion.
According to a report in the Times of India, the Kashmir motion was put forward by Bradford West CLP constituency of the Labour Party.
Dr Neeraj Patil, Chairman of Hindus for Labour told Asian Voice, “We are pleased to inform you that the Labour Party conference has not supported the Kashmir motion. The motion passed by Bradford CLP was not successful in getting through the priorities ballot. This motion received zero votes in the affiliate section and 20413 in the CLP section Hindus for Labour voted against this motion and campaigned during the conference to defeat this unilateral, partisan and anti-India motion.”
The Labour Party Conference was supported by shadow health secretary of Britain, Jonathan Ashworth and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan who came to the stall and extended wholehearted support to Hindus for Labour. Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham extended his support too.
MP Steve Reed, Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government reportedly said at the event that he acknowledged that the Labour Party has not done enough to secure or win the support of the Hindu community.
“I think, establishing Hindus for Labour is a major contribution to re-establishing and opening contacts, friendship, communication and mutual understanding between our party and the Hindu community,” Reed told TOI.
