Unwell men could be breath tested to find out if they really are ill.
Scientists have developed a breathalyser that can detect the flu virus, it has been revealed.
The breathalyser that identifies trace amounts of biomarkers linked to the flu virus will sort the genuine patients from those making the most of a heavy cold.
“This will allow people to be proactive and catch illnesses early,” said Professor Perena Gouma, from the Materials Science and Engineering Department at The University of Texas, who developed the breathalyser, which is similar to the machines used by cops for roadside alcohol tests.
It could also help prevent flu epidemics from spreading, protecting both individuals as well as the public health. According to a study in the journal Sensors, it could also be adapted to diagnose other diseases, including ebola.
