Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr Suresh Prabhu will be visiting the UK this week to co-chair the India-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) in London on 11 January 2018. He is a Chartered Accountant by profession and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Since 1996, Prabhu has been a repeatedly elected Member of Parliament from Rajapur Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra as a member of the Shiv Sena political party. He quit Shiv Sena and joined BJP on 9 November 2014 and currently represents Andhra Pradesh in the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) of Indian Parliament. He is also a part of the Honorary Board of Advisors of Indian International Model United Nations.
It is believed that he may be visiting UK from 11-14 January to discuss possibilities that Brexit may bring for India in certain areas of interests such as exports. Some are also seeing this as a preparatory visit on behalf of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who may be coming to the UK in April for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting (CHOGM).
Prabhu has held several government and semi government positions, which includes Chairmanship of Maharashtra State Finance Commission, Saraswat Co-operative Bank, Member of the Maharashtra Tourism Development Board, among others. He has been the recipient of several awards.
Prabhu will be attending a number of events while in the UK, including a reception organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers and Commerce Industries on Saturday 13th. FICCI in the UK is currently headed by Dr Param Shah, appointed as the new UK director for FICCI last year, after the former director Pratik Dattani stepped down.
Shah was formerly the Head of FICCI- Gujarat State Council in India. He was on the Central Regional Committee of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), statutory body and a national-level council for technical education, under Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development.
He carries with him over 15 years of professional work experience. He started his career as an Academic and was associated with various Universities in India as a Faculty in Finance and Corporate Laws. He has been an academic advisor to the ICFAI University. He is an Alumnus of prestigious International Visitor Leadership Programme (ILVP) by the U.S. Department of State.
Shah has about 40 papers on various aspects of Management and other economic issues to his credit. He holds a PhD in Management. He also holds a Master in Business Administration (MBA) specialising in International Marketing & Corporate Laws and a Masters in Commerce. He graduated in Law and Commerce. He also holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights.
