ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) Leicester was devastated, when a survey in 2017 found significant damage to the roof of their temple. After raising £350,000, and receiving an additional grant of £750,000 from Historic England, in 2021, ISKCON began the process of renovating the 150-year-old roof.

The project received financial support, after close collaboration between Leicester City Council’s conservation team, ISKCON and Historic England, due to the building’s historical and geographical significance.

Pradyumna Das, president of ISKCON Leicester, explained the importance of having a temple in the centre of the city, stating “We believe we have a special message to share with the people of Leicester. A message of peace and spirituality. That message needs to reach all people so being in the centre allows connecting with a wide variety of people.”

This sentiment was shared by local councillor Patrick Kitterick, who said “The city centre is the common ground for all the communities in Leicester, a place that is rich and diverse. People can share cultures and ideas and the temple adds to this richness.

Councillor Kitterick, who highlighted ISKCON’s role in preserving the local landmark, added “The new use for historic buildings and to find someone who will love and take care of them is a real prize. I am glad this magnificent building has found a purpose in the 21st century.”

Despite the pandemic prolonging the renovation, with the building now due to open later this year, ISKCON has remained defiant in carrying out its vital work. Pradyumna Das reported “Even though the temple is closed right now due to renovation, we have restarted our programs and connect with families across the city. We also use Avanti fields school for gatherings on Sunday afternoons, festivals, celebrations and education”. He also added, “In the absence [of the temple] we continue to provide our services because that’s the real essence of what we offer.”
