Newham-born DJ Lady G, aka Gurpreet Mudhar, is the first Asian female featured DJ on the SolarRadio.com cruise on the 28th of May 2023.
Since becoming the first female Asian presenter on SolarRadio.com last year Gurpreet has gone from strength to strength. From hosting a weekly show on which she prides herself on showcasing her own eclectic music selection of Soulful House, R&B, Soul Classics and more, her shows frequently chart on the MixCloud Music Charts - a platform where audiences can listen again or find shows that suit their own tastes.
This extremely shy and unassuming young lady is a third-generation Sikh, born in Newham, East London in the 1980s, who found her voice behind the mic!
“There is something about the microphone that brings me out of my shell.” Says Gurpreet. “I find it odd that a studio environment enhances my desire to positively impact people through my chat and the great music I play!”
Gurpreet is the eldest of five children. The family had humble beginnings as her Indian immigrant parents navigated a new culture and language in the late 1960s. Their work ethic inspired Gurpreet in all areas of her life - education, work and then finding her passion as a radio presenter.
During her secondary education at Plashet School for Girls it became apparent that Gurpreet had quite a prominent creative and musical streak, discovering a talent for all things musical. So much so, she was gifted a keyboard one Christmas. She then attended Newham College where she sat A Levels in English Language, Literature and Communication Studies, then by chance flicking through the community pages in her local newspaper the Newham Recorder, Gurpreet saw a tiny advert appealing for volunteers for Woodside Hospital Radio, where she presented her own weekly show until the station closed in 2020.. Part of Gurpreet’s volunteer roles included that of fund-raising activities gaining promotion as the station’s Communications Officer - skills she learned during her Communications Degree at the University of East London. Life was falling into place.
Soon Gurpreet joined NuSound Radio as its Drive Time Presenter presenting shows to its Asian Community in the borough as well as gaining valuable experience at Sunrise Radio, Southall.
More recently Gurpreet has been inspired to support others at a local community centre in Essex, by working with people aged 11-17, that have a range of barriers such as low confidence and self-esteem. The smiles and examples of self-belief over the last few weeks have been immensely rewarding.
Now DJ Lady G finds herself in huge demand as one of a few Asian female presenters invited to a gig at venues.
Speaking to Asian Voice, Gurpreet said, “Children have that natural ability to be fearless, are more inquisitive and the sound of children’s laughter in the playground is pure joy. Growing up I was shy. As a third-generation Sikh, I felt pulled in two directions; one to assimilate in my place of birth and another to honour my heritage and it took time for me to learn to own and celebrate both. At the same time!
“I work with young people aged 11-17, that have a range of barriers such as low confidence, at a local community centre in Essex, helping them to find their confidence and voice, and as my DJing career goes from strength to strength, sharing my love of soul/RnB, Soulful House and more, my mantra has become ‘yes you can’ to them and to me. That power of self-belief is extraordinary.”
