The fifth Earl of Balfour believes he may just have found a way for his eldest daughter to inherit his title. The 68-year-old Earl of Balfour, who has four daughters and no sons believes that his eldest daughter can inherit his title if she switches gender under a proposed amendment to the 2004 Gender Recognition Act.
According to the law of primogeniture, his children will not be able to inherit his title as they are all female, and the Balfour title will then be passed on to his Lordship's younger brother.
The Earl stated, “As far as I can see, when I meet my maker, that very day one of my daughters could declare that there has always been a man screaming to get out of her female body.”
He added, “What is there to stop someone from changing gender and taking a title.”
