Now, this is something only female politicians have to contend with.
Prime Minister Theresa May was heavily criticised by former education secretary Nicky Morgan for appearing in a newspaper wearing designer leather trouser that cost a mammoth £995.
Morgan claimed the outfit choice had been “noticed and discussed”, in an interview with the Times.
Morgan, who was sacked from her position when May formed her government in July following David Cameron’s resignation, fell out with May over the question of schools being required to report on the migration status of pupils.
May was pictured in the Sunday Times wearing bitter chocolate Amanda Wakeley trousers which she had paired with £140 black Burberry trainers.
Morgan told the Times: “I don’t think I’ve ever spent that much on anything apart from my wedding dress.”
For Morgan, May is a prime minister who is out of touch (taking into account the cost of trousers at £995 a pair), sending the wrong signals to a country that has spent eight years struggling through austerity.
The Loughborough MP says the trousers would not go down well with her voters.
“My barometer is always ‘How am I going to explain this in Loughborough market?” says Morgan.
While May’s expensive trousers may have caused quite a stir, she has always admitted she enjoys clothes.
May is someone who has never hidden the fact that she enjoys dressing up and being photographed in her latest outfits. In fact, she has been quite upfront in admitting that although her focus is on the job at hand, she does take her appearance seriously.
Morgan, on the other hand, seems to be suggesting that PM May should keep the common touch, shopping at stores where the price tags are a little more within reach of ordinary voters.
