A top paediatrician has voiced fears on 111 calls.

Neena Modi, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said that recognising illness became more difficult the younger the child.

According to a report in The Times, she questioned whether 111 call handlers, who are not medically trained, should be carrying out assessments.

She said: “It is uncertain, because studies have not been adequately conducted, whether the telephone triage service such as NHS 111 is going to be safe and effective for very small children.”
