Dr Muhammad Raza had developed close working friendship with the man, a fellow senior practitioner, but the relationship soured in November 2011, a General Dental Council panel heard.

In the aftermath of the fall-out, Dr Raza, of Leicester, sent a series of foul-mouthed text messages to his colleague, a secretly gay Muslim.

Panel chairman Brent Weller said members considered the messages to be threatening and “could not be anything other than homophobic”.

He told Dr Raza: “We note that on more than one occasion in the course of your evidence you conceded you had counter-threatened Dr A in response to threats you perceived he was making towards you.”

Tom Kirk-Smythe, for the General Dental Council, said the row between the two began when Dr Raza tried to hand a case over to his colleague as his shift was finishing.

The exchange of text messages then took place.
