Community’s week-long Holi celebrations begin

Tuesday 07th March 2023 07:06 EST

Members of the community celebrated Holi in the first week of March with great zeal and enthusiasm.  The High Commissioner of India in the UK, Vikram Doraiswami attended the Holi celebration on 5 March organised by community members of Dartford and supported by Dartford Borough Council. Mr Gareth Johnson, MP, Cllr. Paul Cutler, Mayor Dartford Borough Council & others joined in.

The celebrations didn’t end early on. UK-based non-profit organisation Heritage Bengal Global will mark its Holi celebration this Saturday at the Harrow Civic Centre which goes into demolition and regeneration in April this year.

Organising Committee members Sourav Pal, Tamalika Basu and Ramita Ghosh are working tirelessly to ensure the event is a grand success. The weather though is giving them

some causes of concern, ‘but the response from the diaspora is really encouraging’ said Tamalika.

Vice President Mahua Bej said, “Last year we did it in front of the Tower Bridge, possibly the first of its kind - that was followed by our participation at the London Mayor’s Diwali in the square and our very own Thames Durga Parade which created a very good following of our organisation in the community, leading to a very good response in this years Holi.”

Director of the organisation Anirban Mukhopadhyay quipped in a sombre mood, “I am remembering the past Mayor of Harrow Mrinal Choudhury whom we lost in 2020, but because of the strong relationship he created with us during his times, the Harrow Council offered us the venue which we will use as a colourful farewell to the nostalgic old buildings of the Civic Centre, which go into demolition and regeneration.”
