Over 150 scientists and campaigners called for a global ban on genetically editing human embryos, claiming that it could “irrevocably alter the human species.” They said that it could also lead to a world where discrimination and inequality were “inscribed on to the human genome”.

However, Sir Mark Walport, the Government's chief scientific adviser said that he believed there were “circumstances” where the genetic editing of human embryos could be “acceptable”.
