A British Airways flight going from Mumbai to London was diverted to Azerbaijan's capital Baku on Monday after it declared an emergency.

The flight was due to land at the Heathrow airport on Monday evening. Reports from passengers indicate the BA198 had to be diverted due to a technical fault on the aircraft. Engineers were looking into the issue before the flight could resume its journey.

The flight departed from the Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at 5: 15 PM, when it was scheduled to depart at 01: 15 PM earlier in the day. One passenger onboard Twitted that the technical fault involved smoke in the first class cabin.

Engineers in Baku are checking the aircraft, it said, adding, “we are awaiting more information about the situation”.

There were 135 passengers and 17 crew aboard the Boeing 777 aircraft.

Meanwhile a number of airlines had put out an alert earlier on Monday that many of its flights will be disrupted due to heavy snowfall in the UK on Sunday.
