A giant rat was found in an Indian restaurant in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, which led to the owner, Kumud Roy's prosecution and ban.

The rat was a foot long and was found caught in a trap at Rani Indian Cuisine. Kumud Roy was also given a hygiene prohibition order and a 300 hours community penalty.

Ashfield District Council officers visited the premises in June 2014 and found that there were rodent droppings, live and dead flies, as well as bait trays around the preparation table. They also found that the refrigerator in the middle preparation room was dirty and contained soiled food and badly sealed containers.

It was later revealed that the staff at the restaurant had not completed food hygiene training. Roy pleaded guilty to 11 offences.

While sentencing Roy at Nottingham Crown Court, on 26th March 2015, Judge Godsmark QC said that the premises were undoubtedly dirty and he was surprised that there had not been any public health issues. On the other hand, Godsmark noted that there had been an improvement since the inspection.

Kumud Roy is not permitted to participate in the management of the Rani or any other food business until the order has been lifted.
