Very hot drinks could cause cancer, warns WHO

Beware all those who like to have a nice hot cuppa as very hot drinks 'probably' cause cancer of the oesophagus.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that extremely hot drinks can cause cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of the WHO, said hot drinks of 65C (150F) and over are likely to cause cancer of the oesophagus.

However, these new findings don't mean you can no longer down hot drinks. The advice is – just keep a check on the temperature.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Northumbria University found that the perfect drinking temperature for tea – 60C – is achieved six minutes after brewing begins.

In China, Iran and Turkey, where tea is drunk at over 70C, studies found that the risk of oesophageal cancer increased with temperature.
