NEW YORK: It was an unexpected victory for 28 year old Alexandria Ocasio Cortez who beat 10-term Congressman Joseph Crowley in the House of Representatives in a phenomenal victory. Crowley was in line to become the next House speaker if Democrats had won majority.

A self-professed educator, organiser and working-class New Yorker, Ocasio-Cortez’s mother belongs from Puerto Rico and father from South Bronx. She has worked with expecting mothers, waited tables, led classrooms and even volunteered in Bernie Sanders’ 2016 Presidential campaign. During a promotional video for her Campaign she said, “Going into politics wasn’t in the plan. But after 20 years of the same representation, we have to ask: who has New York been changing for?” She added, “This race is about people vs money; we’ve got people, they’ve got money.” Ocasio-Cortez has promised to represent working families and work towards lowering rent, increasing incomes and ensuring accessible healthcare to more people.

Following the victory, she tweeted, “This is the start of a movement.” Her win was tweeted by US President Donald Trump, who tweeted, “This is a big one that nobody saw happening.”
