US Sikh group raises $210,000 for needy Punjab students

Washington: The Sikh Human Development Foundation has raised over $ 210,000 for a scholarship programme it provides for underprivileged children in Punjab. More than 350 guests from metropolitan Washington area came to show their support at the gala that also featured pop singer Jaz Dhami. The SHDF has been giving scholarships to bright but poor students in Punjab since 2001. Chairman Gajider Singh Ahuja said, “We need your help, They need your help.” Chief guest Gurcharan Singh Kanwal donated $ 50,000, and in recognition to his contributions, Kanwal and his wife were honoured with the SHDF Community Higher Education Empowerment Award. Board member Manpreet Singh said, “SHDF has been able to provide scholarships to over 4,000 students and more than 1,500 students have graduated and become professionals.”
