COLOMBO: Chairman of the National Elections’ Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said that postponing of the elections is something that the Commission cannot decide at this point of time although we will continue to accept nominations. “We have not arrived at a consensus yet to the effect that this decision should be arrived at either”, Deshapriyah said.

Leader Samagi Jana Banavegaya,Sajith Premadasa outlined that a number of elections have been postponed globally. “What they must actually do is to suspend this election and find a solution to this Corona issue. Please consider these facts and prioritize the lives of the voters over the 2/3rd majority,” Premadasa said.

“I make a very clear request, make the dissolution of Parliament null and void and lets have an election after the Coronavirus issue is sorted”, he said. He further added,”Recall the dissolution. That can be done through a Gazette notification. Let’s do so and spend the money allocated for the election to fight the Coronavirus”.

Additionally, Tamil National Alliance requested the General elections be postponed citing the current situation in Sri Lanka on COVID-19.
