Waheed Ahmed (21), the son of Rochdale Labour Councillor, Shakil Ahmed, was arrested for attempting to go to Syria via Turkey. He has now returned to the UK.

Waheed Ahmed, along with his 8 relatives were detained in Turkey in early April, on suspicion of trying to cross the Syrian border.

Simon Danczuk MP, a Labour candidate defending the Rochdale seat in the upcoming election revealed that he was made aware by the Foreign Office that Ahmed would be arriving back in the UK at Birmingham airport.

Shakil Ahmed had believed his son was in Birmingham on a work placement, when he found out that he was detained in Turkey. He was “shocked, worried and extremely upset” when he found out that his son had been arrested on the Turkey-Syria border.

Shakil Ahmed had stated, “My son is a good Muslim and his loyalties belong to Britain, so I don’t understand what he’s doing there. If I thought for a second that he was in danger or being radicalised, I would have reported him to the authorities."
