Washington: Maju Varghese, the Indian-origin director of the White House military office (WHMO), has quit his post, citing personal reasons. In a series of tweets, Varghese said leading the WHMO was the honour of a lifetime. An Obama administration alum, Varghese joined the Biden White House after leading the president’s inauguration efforts and serving as a senior adviser for Biden’s presidential campaign. The White House declined to say whether a replacement has been selected.
“This is a demanding place to work and it’s because the work is important, and we throw ourselves into this. . . Right now, it’s best for me and my family that I kind of just try to strike a little bit more of a balance,” Varghese, said. He, however, did not detail his next endeavours. As head of the military office, Varghese used to coordinate with the military branches responsible for supporting presidential operations at the White House. A lawyer by training, Varghese was born in the US to parents who immigrated from Kerala.
