Following the acquisition of East Africa’s largest media group by a wealthy, politically connected businessman, concerns are rising over the future of independent journalism in the region.

Millions in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda rely on Nation Media Group (NMG) outlets, such as Kenya’s Daily Nation, Tanzania’s Mwananchi, and Uganda’s Daily Monitor, for trusted news. NMG now has a new majority shareholder.

Tanzanian billionaire Rostam Aziz, announced that his company, Taarifa Ltd, has acquired a 54% controlling stake in NMG, pending regional regulatory approval. A former CCM MP with close ties to politicians, Aziz has faced concerns over potential editorial influence. At a Nairobi press conference, he pledged support for “credible and independent journalism” and emphasised the partnership’s commitment to editorial professionalism.

Founded in 1959 by Aga Khan to give Africa’s majority population a voice, NMG has long been part of East Africa’s democratic infrastructure. Akfed sold its stake to focus on other sectors, sparking debate about the company’s future independence.

Churchill Otieno and former editor Bernard Mwinzi say NMG’s ownership change raises concerns over political influence, ending the insulation once provided by Akfed.

Rostam Aziz, with close ties to leaders across East Africa, pledged to maintain editorial independence while investing in NMG’s digital growth. Born in western Tanzania in 1960, he built a business empire in trading, telecoms, mining, and energy, and has prior media experience with Mwananchi Communications and Habari Corporation.
