Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor in Dhaka on 31 July, in a meeting seen as diplomatically significant amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the region. Gor, who began his first official visit to Bangladesh on 30 July 2026, welcomed Trivedi's appointment in June, saying he looked forward to working closely with him in his new role.
The visit comes as Washington seeks to strengthen its engagement in South Asia, particularly in the Bay of Bengal, where India remains central to the US strategic outlook. Foreign policy experts believe Gor is keen to steer Bangladesh away from its recent China-oriented foreign policy trajectory, including developments linked to the proposed Myanmar Corridor. His visit also follows Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent trip to Beijing and China's expanding presence in the country.
During the visit, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman described Gor's trip as "exploratory," saying the envoy aims to gain a broader understanding of Bangladesh. Gor is also scheduled to visit the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar.
On 30 July, Trivedi also met Dr Khalilur Rahman and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam to discuss bilateral cooperation, as India and the United States continue to deepen diplomatic engagement with Bangladesh.
