Following the takeover of Tarique Rehman’s new government in Bangladesh, President Mohammed Shahabuddin accused former chief adviser and Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus of “conspiring” to remove him unconstitutionally.

In an interview with ‘Kaler Kantho’, Shahabuddin said attempts were made during Yunus’s tenure to destabilise the country and create a constitutional vacuum.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin said he was excluded from consultations for 18 months while conspiracies were hatched against him, including efforts to undermine peace and block his foreign visits to Kosovo and Qatar. He accused former chief adviser Yunus of ignoring constitutional duties, failing to report on 14-15 trips, and issuing 133 ordinances without justification.

Shahabuddin said he was unaware of a recent US agreement, alleged a blocked plot to replace him with a former chief justice, and described the October 22, 2024 protests outside Bangabhaban as a “terrifying night” controlled by the military. He credited the army and BNP leadership for upholding constitutional continuity, quoting service chiefs: “You are the supreme commander; your defeat would mean the defeat of the armed forces, which we will prevent at any cost.”
