Food standards could get even worse post Brexit

It has been alleged that the UK's food safety regime is failing to ensure an acceptably safe food supply as food poisoning rates were very high, with confirmed cases of Campylobacter bacteria, for example, which is said to have increased by about 46% from 2008 and 2012.

UK's food regulator, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has suggested since 2014 that poultry is not clean enough that it can be washed safely without the risk of spreading infection. Additionally, consumer trust is said to be low, and the food industry os focus on the uncertainties developing from Brexit.

The FSA is said to be planning a programme of change – FSA plans to change who conducts food safety inspections in the UK, as well as proposes to transfer responsibility for many food safety inspections and audits from the public sector to private commercial assurance providers.
