India and the UK have held a series of high-level meetings in London aimed at strengthening their bilateral partnership, with discussions covering trade, investment, education, technology, youth engagement and parliamentary ties.
India’s High Commissioner to the UK, Periasamy Kumaran, met several senior British figures, including members of the House of Lords and a UK minister, as part of efforts to further develop relations between the two countries.
On September 19, the High Commissioner met Lord Krish Raval OBE, a Member of the House of Lords, to discuss expanding the India-UK relationship, with particular emphasis on commerce, capital flows and education.
During the preceding week, Kumaran also met Baroness Winterton of Doncaster, the UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Indo-Pacific. Their discussions focused on strengthening the relationship between India and the UK, shared priorities and ways to advance the countries’ Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The High Commission said the meeting involved a “constructive discussion” on the India-UK bilateral relationship and opportunities to further strengthen the strategic partnership.
Kumaran also met Lord Forsyth of Drumlean, the Lord Speaker of the House of Lords, during the same week. Their meeting focused on strengthening parliamentary and legislative ties between India and the UK, while also discussing shared democratic values and the advancement of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership across different areas.
The High Commission described the discussion as “convivial” and said the two sides discussed strengthening India-UK parliamentary ties and advancing the partnership in various domains.
Separately, on September 7, Kumaran met Leslie Maasdorp, chief executive of British International Investment (BII), to explore opportunities for expanding economic engagement between India and the UK.
According to the High Commission, the discussions focused on strengthening economic ties and identifying new opportunities for investment and collaboration.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of deepening business partnerships and encouraging sustainable investment in several sectors, including renewable energy and climate finance, digital infrastructure, healthcare and life sciences, financial inclusion, sustainable infrastructure and financing for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
The series of meetings comes as India and the UK continue efforts to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with trade, investment, technology, education, parliamentary cooperation and sustainable development among the areas of focus.
