The Bhavan, which is the largest centre for classical Indian arts and culture outside India, met with great success at its annual fundraising gala held on November 24 at Radisson Blu, Portman Square.

The event, which marked its 30th anniversary this year, showcased the authentic Indian classical arts with both students and teachers giving performances across an evening of delectable Indian vegetarian street food and hors d'oeuvres, followed by a 3-course dinner.

The High Commissioner of India to the U.K., His Excellency Mr. Y.K. Sinha gave the keynote speech as the Chief Guest this year, stating “The Bhavan has an important role of keeping the ancient culture alive for the younger generation.”

The high-profile event was very well attended with over 300 guests including dignitaries from the British Asian community and House of Lords Members Baroness Usha Prashar, Lord Swraj Paul and Lord Navnit Dholakia.

The fundraising activity has been able to raise £40,000 or more each year. This is a result of the gala, as well as the support from many businesses and individuals who took advertisements in the souvenir brochure.

This annual event is crucial to raise funds to sustain the charity committed to ensuring the rich artistic and cultural heritage of India is alive and available to all in London, via the school and events across the year. Additionally, it aims to attract more people as patrons, members and students of The Bhavan.

“Bringing creativity, arts and value to the community is what The Bhavan strives to do every day. And it would not be possible without our patrons, teachers, students and audiences.” said Mr. Joginder Sanger, Chairman.

Dr. Surekha Mehta was the driving force behind the campaign this year, with able support from the staff and volunteers at The Bhavan.
