I refer to the article ‘Growing anti-Hindu hatred in Britain demands urgent attention’ published last week.
The British Indian community has contributed extensively to this great country we live in, integrating fully into society. It stands as one of the most successful diasporas in the country and enjoys full employment.
Britain is not and should not become a sectarian state. What makes Britain so great is that our country has always depended upon communities living together. We are a multiracial country, not a multicultural country. The second we start to stir up grievance-based politics between groups based on religion or race, you are pitting neighbours against each other, and you start to unravel the culture of tolerance that makes this country so great.
Entrepreneurial spirit, strong family values and resilience have defined our community’s success over decades. Many originate from East Africa and India; we have been on an incredible journey. British Indians have made tremendous progress since across all sectors. We do not need the taxpayer to incur the costs of protection. In fact, no one wants to see a policeman outside the temple. We give more to the Treasury year on year than we ask for.
Our children and grandchildren are now at the top universities, in high-flying jobs in the City, in medicine, in professional services, in media and in politics. Until recently we had a British Indian Prime Minister, The Rt Hon Rishi Sunak. We should view this as something positive and a testament to our community. Demonstrating that we are well integrated, and that we should be proud of our British citizenship. The success of British Indians has come not through grievance or separation, but through integration, contribution, and a shared belief in Britain. Hence, we do not need protection, unlike the other communities as there is less hatred towards us.
