Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the final sections of India’s 2,800-kilometre Dedicated Freight Corridor network during a high-profile public event in Vadodara.
Addressing the 'NaMo for Viksit Bharat' youth gathering, Modi inaugurated three major final stretches of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, comprising the Sanand (North)-Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Saphale, and New Saphale-JNPT routes spanning 326 route kilometres at a cost exceeding 20,700 crore rupees.
The landmark project fully connects Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai with Dadri in Uttar Pradesh, establishing a high-capacity logistics artery that fundamentally separates heavy freight operations from passenger rail corridors across northern and western India.
Transformative shift in logistics infrastructure
Conceived in 2004 with a dedicated executing body established in 2006, the freight corridor project languished in administrative delays for nearly a decade, recording zero completed route kilometres prior to 2014.
Since the project's acceleration over the past 12 years, the operational network has expanded to accommodate more than 430 freight trains daily across its Eastern and Western arms. Transit efficiencies have improved dramatically; a double-stack container train can now transport cargo equivalent to 250 heavy road trucks in a single journey, cutting travel times for 100-kilometre journeys from six and a half hours down to under three hours. Logistics costs are projected to drop to roughly seven per cent, substantially boosting domestic manufacturing competitiveness.
PM denounces opposition critics in address
During his address, Modi used the milestone to launch a sharp political critique against the Opposition, employing the folksy term “Naraz Fufa” (angry uncle) to dismiss critics who question the utility of major infrastructure.
Mocking predictions that rail corridors would harm traditional road transport, the Prime Minister asserted that the network complements broader logistics while expanding overall capacity.
He further took a direct swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s youth outreach campaigns, contrasting what he termed a misleading echo of lies with the government's focus on job creation, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence development.
Comprehensive regional investments and economic strategy
The freight corridor completion formed the centrepiece of a broader development package totaling over 35,000 crore rupees unveiled in Vadodara. Additional infrastructure works include the newly dedicated Jobat-Tanda Road rail line, 1,780 crore rupees in highway developments, 2,600 crore rupees in state civic projects, and 9,700 crore rupees in future rail expansions, such as track-quadrupling between Vadodara and Ratlam.
Highlighting India's broader industrial push, Modi cited the production of 50,000 modern rail coaches since 2014, the addition of 2.5 lakh wagons, and the expansion of national solar PV manufacturing capacity beyond 200 gigawatts to power emerging artificial intelligence and data infrastructure.
