Youth protests intensify over Indian electoral roll deletions

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has launched nationwide agitations demanding the resignation and prosecution of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over massive electoral roll deletions.

Founded in May 2026 by digital strategist Abhijeet Dipke, the youth-led political movement previously organised summer demonstrations that forced the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on 25 July 2026. The party's focus shifted after reports on 23 September 2026 revealed internal commission objections regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

Following the removal of 130 million voters across 30 states, CJP supporters staged mass rallies in major urban centres, including a demonstration at Mumbai's Shivaji Park on October 2. Led by Dipke, the party accused authorities of targeted voter suppression against opposition blocs and minority communities. Protesters demanded the immediate freezing of the 2025 electoral lists, repeal of the 2023 Election Commission appointment law, and independent scrutiny of all recent revisions.

In response to police crackdowns and hundreds of detentions in Delhi over the weekend, the CJP issued an ultimatum calling for nationwide marches to Jantar Mantar on 10 October 2026 unless Kumar steps down.

The agitation gained significant legal backing, when the Supreme Court of India issued formal notices to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, the Election Commission, and Gyanesh Kumar. The court cited serious concerns surrounding voter list credibility and demanded transparent responses prior to its next scheduled hearing.
