The 20th Asian Games came to an end in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with India securing fourth position in the final standings after accumulating 85 medals.
Over 10,000 athletes representing 46 Asian nations competed across 43 sporting disciplines from 19 September to 4 October, making the fortnight-long multi-sport event a crucial milestone for sports bodies preparing for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
India’s campaign yielded 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze medals, driven by historic team victories alongside strong individual campaigns. A major milestone occurred in women’s hockey, where the national team captured the gold medal, ending a 44-year wait for the continental crown while automatically securing India's entry into the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Cricket provided another key highlight as India accomplished a rare gold-medal sweep, with both the men’s team, who beat rivals Pakistan in the final, and the women’s team claiming top honors. Further gold medals were secured across archery, shooting, boxing, wrestling, and kabaddi.
Track and field events alongside shooting provided the primary backbone of the contingent's total output. The shooting team delivered 15 total medals across air rifle, pistol, and shotgun disciplines, including a historic Asian-record gold in the mixed team trap. The athletics squad added crucial late podium finishes, including a gold medal in the women’s 4x400m relay alongside Sawan Barwal’s silver in the men’s marathon, which ended a 44-year wait for an Indian marathon medal outside home soil. India achieved this fourth-place finish with a streamlined contingent of approximately 500 athletes across 36 disciplines.
Finishing behind China, Japan, and South Korea, India’s 85-medal haul reflects expanding competitive depth across international sports. The closing ceremony at the Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium formally passed the Asian Games flag to Doha, Qatar, which will host the next edition in 2030. Indian sports administrators are said to evaluate the performance data from Nagoya to refine high-performance training systems ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games.
