The Indian national cricket team concluded their international assignments for 2025 with a dramatic 3-1 series victory over South Africa, following a high-stakes 30-run win in the fifth and final T20I.
Playing at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India survived a fierce counter-attack to defend a mammoth total of 231 for five. This win marks India’s eighth consecutive bilateral T20I series triumph since December 2023, providing a massive psychological advantage as the national selectors prepare to finalise the T20 World Cup squad in Mumbai.
Batting first in front of a capacity crowd, India’s innings was defined by an explosive 105-run fourth-wicket partnership between Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya. Varma provided the anchor with a polished 73 off 42 balls, but it was Pandya who stole the headlines with a historic display of power-hitting.
The all-rounder smashed a 16-ball half-century, the second-fastest by an Indian in T20I history, bettered only by Yuvraj Singh’s legendary 12-ball effort in 2007. Pandya eventually holed out for 63 off just 25 deliveries, an innings featuring five boundaries and five sixes that catapulted India past the 230-run mark after captain Suryakumar Yadav’s disappointing run continued with a score of just five.
South Africa’s chase of 232 began with terrifying intent as opener Quinton de Kock, celebrating his 100th T20 international, blazed 65 runs from 35 balls. Alongside Dewald Brevis, who struck 31, the Proteas reached 118 for one at the halfway mark, appearing well-placed to snatch a series-levelling win.
However, the game turned on its head in the 11th over when Jasprit Bumrah returned to dismiss de Kock with a sharp return catch. This sparked a staggering collapse where the visitors lost four wickets for just 15 runs. Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy proved the architect of the middle-order demolition, finishing with 4 for 53 and securing the Player of the Series award with 10 wickets across the tour.
Despite a late cameo from Marco Jansen, South Africa were eventually restricted to 201 for eight as Bumrah’s clinical death bowling (2 for 17) shut the door on any potential comeback. The result leaves the South African side reflecting on a missed opportunity after they had started the tour so strongly with a 2-0 Test series win. India, meanwhile, will look ahead to a 2026 schedule that begins with a tour of New Zealand on January 11, with the fitness of vice-captain Shubman Gill, who missed the finale with a foot injury being a primary concern for the management.
