Following their first-place ranking in the country's cleanliness survey, the residents of Surat have shown increased awareness. Recently, the municipal corporation imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 when firecrackers were set off during a wedding procession in Katargam. Subsequently, those responsible, clad in suits and boots, were seen clearing the road with brooms in hand. These incidents have garnered widespread attention on social media and have become the topic of conversation in town.

Bursting of firecrackers caused paper waste on the road

The individuals from Varghoda in Amba Talavadi, Katargam, initially indulged in setting off firecrackers with great enthusiasm. However, they did not overlook their responsibility. Despite the paper litter strewn across the road from the firecrackers, they diligently cleaned it up, adorned in suits and boots.

Awareness after punitive action of municipal authorities

During the ongoing wedding season, numerous grooms can be observed in various parts of the city, often leading to the dispersal of a substantial amount of waste due to the bursting of firecrackers. To address this issue, the Surat Municipal Corporation has implemented punitive measures, imposing fines amounting to thousands of rupees. Recently, two such instances resulted in fines of Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 5,000 respectively.
